Abstract

History has a tendency to erase women from its books after their own lifetimes, especially in the world of music. While well-known and extensively written about during their own lives, female composers are too often pushed to the side and forgotten not long after their deaths. One example of this phenomenon is Carrie Jacob Bond. While alive, she created her own publishing company for music and had several hit songs, some of which sold millions of copies. In death, however, she is relatively unknown to the public. In this presentation, I am going to talk about how Carrie Jacob Bond achieved her success as a female composer at the turn of the 19th century, and compare and contrast two of her most popular songs, I Love You Truly and Perfect Day.
