Abstract
I plan on employing Qualitative Research in order to obtain a better understanding of which techniques are the most beneficial when assisting English Language Learners in composition skills, specifically Asian students of UNG. Tutors at the Gainesville UNG Writing Center are working with an increasing number of ELL students and the current approaches utilized in conferencing with Native English Speakers may not be as effective with ELL students. Tutors could be trained in simplified pedagogical approaches from ESL professors for conferencing with ELL students within time constraints and reasonable expectations. After training tutors to internalize Metalinguistics, how to assess the level of vocabulary appropriate for each student, and how to transfer proofreading skills to the student, I will interview tutors to evaluate their self-efficacy about their progress with implementation of these tools when conferencing with Asian students. There will be an emphasis on qualitative information, but I will also collect some quantitative information when possible and relevant.
