Abstract
While many history classes explain the institution of slavery thoroughly, not many classes shine a light on the gender differences within this establishment. The topic I wish to explore in my research is how the sexual exploitation of female slaves was greatly overlooked during the Antebellum era. This research will establish the important differences between male slavery and female slavery, highlighting the dividing line that is often blurred. How is female slavery different from male slavery, especially when focusing on the sexual exploitation of women? My question considers the gender differences within slavery, focusing on the sexual abuse female slaves were forced to endure. I will include stories of how female slaves were forced into abusive relationships, used as breeders, and imprisoned under sexual exploitation. Using primary sources, biographies, and other literature involving women and slavery, I will argue that while slavery was a terrible practice (regardless of a slave’s gender) it had particularly drastic effects, both physical and psychological, on the women who were sexually exploited. By establishing the gender gap between slaves, I will show how female slavery is in fact a separate institution that is frequently subsumed into the larger narrative of racial bondage. My goal is to strengthen my audience’s knowledge of the underrepresented battles that slave women were forced to suffer daily.
