Abstract
This article utilizes data collected during a year-long qualitative study of career academies in Southern California to identify six conditions necessary for establishing and maintaining an impactful career academy. As such, the article serves two functions: 1) as an informational resource for potential stakeholders who might be interested in developing and sustaining a career academy and 2) as a cautionary essay about the conditions that can inhibit the viability of career academies in the United States.
