Abstract

The field of linguistics in Mexico presents a unique problem due to threats to indigenous languages and cultures. Lack of access to education makes it harder for members of indigenous communities to be part of Mexican society, and lack of cultural understanding causes people in mainstream society to be unaware of the problems communities face, such as mistreatment by authorities or stereotypes by mainstream media. Roughly ten percent of the population of Mexico is indigenous, and about half of that group speaks an indigenous language. Because of the threats to indigenous communities, several languages are in direct danger of extinction. Since language is a carrier of culture and history, it is important to protect these languages in the interest of a more knowledgeable future. Efforts to preserve the languages and support indigenous communities have manifested in government, education, and technology.
