Abstract
Soundwavesis an abstract painting that symbolizes the organic ideas found in the world around us such as in music and the subconscious. This artwork was created in direct response to an instrumental song called “Pretty Little Ditty” by the musical band Red Hot Chili Peppers. The goal was to visually describe a raw interpretation of the different vibrations created by the variety of instruments used in the song. Each color and shape are representations of the soundwaves in the song and the overall energy of the tones.
Wassily Kandinsky’s dynamic painting Composition 8inspired this work. It takes concentration, creativity, and a shift in mindset to visualize sounds. Envisioning a tangible form of music also requires breaking down ideas of what is and what is not is crucial in order to open your mind to a new realm of thinking. This process felt meditative and brought focus to the present moment.
The radial symmetry is reminiscent of a seashell spiral which I subconsciously did in response to the origin of the band which was founded on the west coast of California. Painting this allowed me to attain a better understanding of the interconnected relationship between sound, color, and shape.
In this fast-paced world it is important to exhibit visual literacy and recognize the interrelated patterns present within both art and music. I aspire for this painting to motivate others to live in the present and encourage them to see the pattern of life present all around us.
