Abstract

This study investigated the impact of divorce on the structure of the family unit, specifically on the relational satisfaction held by members of blended families. The research questions addressed attitudes regarding different family systems and relational satisfaction. The rationale for this research lie in finding ways to improve upon and perhaps create a new narrative of the what a family is in American culture.

A pilot study was conducted with public university students, who responded to a survey of relational satisfaction and family systems. Data was analyzed to create a benchmark of attitudes towards traditional and stepfamily systems and then retrospectively analyzed to determine if these attitudes were enduring or evolving, as well as to determine future paths of inquiry.
