Abstract
Literature can often act as fictional case studies through which to analyze historical events. One such piece is David Henry Hwang’s play, M. Butterfly. Hwang’s work explores the power struggle between Eastern and Western governments and ideologies through the relationship between the mysterious and beautiful Song Liling and the French diplomat, Rene Gallimard. Hwang creates a convoluted relationship that pushes this struggle to a climax and by reversing traditional gender roles, challenges preconceived notions of these roles in the context of Western and Eastern cultures.
