“The American Flag, Dahlonega, and the University of North Georgia”

Intentions

The goal of the project was to create a work of art showing pride in the United States, The University of North Georgia’s military heritage, and the gold history of Dahlonega. We explored these topics in relation to a large format American flag painting we were creating alongside our studies. The painting is a reflection of our findings. The creation of the painting also fit within the goals of many art departments in institutions of higher education to create and exhibit public artwork for the enjoyment of students, faculty, and staff. The painting is now housed in the Military Science building of the university, and it serves that very purpose.

Experience

As Art students, Sydney Dye and myself (Jillian Conner) gained valuable experience, which we otherwise may not have at an undergraduate level. We were able to work as apprentices under a more experienced artist. The age old tradition still holds firm as a means of learning in the art world. We were able to collaboratively work on a high quality piece of professional artwork. The scale was also far larger than either of us had previously dealt with. We were also able to work within certain parameters, for example the design was created with the approval of Colonel James T. Palmer, who agreed to house the painting in the Military Science building on the Dahlonega campus at UNG. In addition to the aforementioned experiences, we were also each able to add the piece to our portfolios.
