Abstract
An interview of Oconee County resident Larry Weatherford conducted in November 2013. He was born in 1930 in the county and grew up there. There was a point where he lived in Eagle Tavern. He speaks about picking cotton on a farm from 9 years old to 13 years old. He speaks fondly of the Oconee education system because of his mother who was a teacher. He recounts watching television on the very first television that Oconee county had, which belonged to a grocery store owner who shared it with the community. He speaks openly about race relations in Oconee during his childhood and adulthood. He also notes with irony that UGA was not built in Watkinsville supposedly because Watkinsville allowed bars to operate; however, while a little before 2013 the city passed a law to allow the sale of alcohol, there were about 43 operating bars near UGA in Athens.
