“Cigars Come Second” brings attention to the rich, tight-knit, local cigar community through painting and printmaking. This group is often viewed as uninviting, relating only to golf enthusiasts or wealthy businessmen. Throughout my years of frequenting cigar shops all over the southeast, I developed the warmest of friendships. The front porch furniture in the gallery and diptych is where I shared my first smoke with my dear friend Medora, a sales representative for Rocky Patel Premium Cigars. These pieces are inherently personal in subject matter. The scrapbook depicts friendships I have created through the cigar world as well as friendships deepened through a shared stick or two. The drypoint process in printmaking produces an intimate sketchbook feel, capturing my relationships as organically as possible.  To those immersed in cigar culture, the cigars come second-it is the sincere, generous, and passionate family that comes first and that I am showcasing in my exhibition.

Artist Bio:
Karyme E. Ramirez was born and raised in Gainesville, Ga. This is where she earned her Associate degree in Visual Arts at the Univerisity of North Georgia... She was accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts program where her main focus was Graphic Design. Ramirez was very artistic early on in her life, from doodling in random notebooks at home to doodling on the service flyers at church. She taught herself how to draw throughout her life by looking up reference pictures of her latest obsession and attempting her best to recreate it on paper. Eventually, she was able to take an art class in high school where she learned the basics of visual arts. One day, her sister encouraged the career path in graphic design because of how naturally creative she was, so after some research, Ramirez chose to chase that career head-on. At the beginning of her college career, she started working at JGeyer Advertising where she learned how to heat press vinyl designs on apparel and soon she was in the art department creating designs for clients. She loves the design process just as much as the hands-on aspects of art.
Since then she has created her own website, created different t-shirt designs to sell for the past two summers, designed a t-shirt for a tap room in her hometown, designed a t-shirt for a music conservatory she grew up at, painted a mural for a mental health facility, and has been learning how to manage social media.
She truly loves to create and continues to push herself to learn new things.
Ramirez wants to put all of the artistic skills that she has obtained throughout her time here at UNG together to create for other people. She would love to start her own business to help other people see that their ideas come to life through art and design.

Artist Statement:
When graphic design meets cinema, many aspects come into play. This piece focuses on how design impacts function and perception. Throughout this body of work, I focus on keeping the essence of the film, adding modern elements, and applying my own artistic style. The measure of success for the five reimagined posters is the ability to excite potential viewers about classic movies and to offer some insight into how important graphic design is throughout aspects of cinema as minuscule as movie posters.

The University of North Georgia and the UNG Linguistics Club are pleased to present the 4th Linguistics Symposium, an in-person conference held at the University’s Dahlonega campus on November 2, 2023.  Funded by a UNG Presidential Innovation grant and the UNG Linguistics Club, this one-day event showcased undergraduate and early graduate research in linguistics. In addition to refereed student panels and posters, the event featured two plenary talks from professors working in linguistics and education.

The twelve-week model of the traditional police academy is a prevailing subject of reform debate, cited as an inadequate model of training which lacks sufficient education on modern-day policing. In response to the growing need for change in law enforcement training, the University of North Georgia’s Public Safety Academy (PSA) was founded in 2015 as the United States’ first-ever, four-year police academy where individuals earn basic law enforcement certification concurrent with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. In its seventh year of operation, the PSA stands as a trailblazer for a new age of police training. Since the program’s inception, law enforcement agencies and universities across the United States have reached out with interest in beginning four-year police academies at their institutions. However, the PSA recognizes a new challenge not previously seen by traditional academies: a pattern in withdrawal rates during the first two years of PSA membership. Because the PSA is the first academy of its kind, no established research exists on identifying specific attrition factors unique to the four-year police academy. This research project establishes preliminary research and data on PSA recruit-initiated withdrawal rates by collecting survey responses and identifying methods for retaining its current members over four years. It also forms the basis of a continuing project and future steps towards addressing those factors that specifically contribute to PSA attrition rates. Findings indicate the potential existence of PSA-specific attrition factors, which may affect its lower graduation rates compared to traditional academies. The results also highlight possible solutions to address the attrition factors of community and engagement, supported by data from students who have voluntarily withdrawn from the program, current students, and graduates of the PSA program.

Persons with visual impairments have two main options for independent mobility, a long white cane or a guide dog (GD). Previous research indicates this population has decreased physical activity across all age groups, correlating to higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Barriers to mobility, such as independent walking, have been demonstrated to be a significant secondary pathway to increased mortality among visually impaired persons over the age of 50.  Few studies report on how either of these mobility aids affect the metabolic demand of ambulation and no research exists exploring the use or validity of a functional exertion test for individuals with visual impairment under usual mobility. The aim of this study was twofold: 
1) to compare the metabolic demand of ambulation with a long white cane to that with a GD; and 2) to assess the use of the six-minute walk test in the visually impaired population.

Metabolic Cost of Ambulation by Visually Impaired Subjects Using Selected Mobility Aids: A Case Study

Many pregnancies and births bring joy and excitement, while some result in heartache and grief, as is often the case when the baby dies prior to labor and delivery, also known as an intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) or a stillbirth. Midwives are closely involved in care for these women during labor and delivery, but evidence-based care guidelines specific to midwifery care during the postpartum period following a term stillbirth are limited in the literature published in the United States. Due to the limited research aimed specifically at this gap in care, a midwifery guideline was developed based on 1) a needs assessment, 2) a literature synthesis, 3) review of current guidelines from professional medical associations, and 4) input from an obstetrician-liaison and the midwives working in a U.S.-based private practice setting. By following an established term stillbirth postpartum clinical guideline, midwives can offer evidenced-based care for patients utilizing their clinical knowledge with skill, empathy, and compassion.
