The Rescue

In Fusion I used primary and secondary acrylic paint colors on canvas, along with random shaped objects that are being drawn from a dark foreground into a distant center of light. This represents the enlightenment that ensues when different cultures and backgrounds learn to live together and cooperate with each other for their mutual growth and welfare.

Dual Perspectives

Free-motion machine embroidery (thread painting) and photography combine to create a realistic scene using cotton canvas and thread.
Working in textiles is my passion. I love the tactile quality, the luscious colors and the traditional aspect of cloth and thread. I'm enchanted by the feel of fabric and thread in my hands. The process is continually exciting and satisfying, so time flies by while I stitch at my sewing machine. Making art is part of me and working creatively makes my heart sing. I'm inspired by the simplicity and beauty of nature. Trees, fields, wildflowers and vines often find their way into my work. I'm drawn to structures such as old barns, stone fences and old homes because they exude character and history. The simplicity of these scenes gives me a feeling of contentment and peace. My hope is that people take as much pleasure in viewing my work as I do in creating it.

This photograph presents the slow process of the earth reclaiming its offspring. The glove is slowly being transformed to soil by the moss. Through decay it is merging back to the earth from whence it originated.

The theme for this work is merging: in particular, the merge between the Old World and the New World. As I was studying this world event, it seemed that the people involved might not have been too thrilled about it. The inhabitants of the Old World were on an adventure to find gold and to spread God. Despite the goal of their conquest, many were lost at sea or ravaged by famine and disease. For the inhabitants of the New World, their fate was far worse. Their land was taken by intruders from a faraway land. Also, the explorers brought diseases that wiped out a large percentage of the new world population. With that said, this piece acts as a thought that someone might have had at one time about the merge. It’s made to be a more comical piece rather than historical. Thankfully, the long term effects are more positive rather than negative.

“Drift" was created through the ancient process of encaustic painting. Layer upon layer luminous color, carving, and texture interact. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word, enkaustikos, meaning "to heat" or "to burn". The method of painting with wax came from ancient Greece where shipbuilders painted the hulls of their ships to seal, protect and decorate the surfaces. This led artists to use encaustic for easel painting and decoration of clay and marble sculptures, and on the ancient Fayum portraits of Egyptian mummy casings. The medium was lost in obscurity after the seventh century until twentieth century artists brought it back into popularity.
I find the process of encuastic painting to be limitless in possibility. In "Drift" handcrafted paints made of beeswax, resin, and natural earth pigments were applied hot on a heated wooden panel; each layer was then fused with a torch to the layer beneath. Through means of subtraction and translucent to opaque layers of color, the composition was revealed. It is my my hope that the viewer can empty, merge, or drift consciousness, finding a moment of visual serenity.
