Project Beloved: The Past That Haunts Us

This project provides a compact syntactic overview of chapter 17 in Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved. I have included both a Reed-Kellogg Diagram and a Tree Diagram to detail the different syntactic elements Morrison utilizes to create emphasis within this chapter. Toni Morrison utilizes multiple linguistic features such as anaphora, polysyndeton, and asyndeton to emphasize Paul D’s blind denial of Sethe’s infanticide eighteen years previously. Her use of conjunctions to begin sentences as well as a plethora of adverbial phrases effectively communicates the panic in Paul D’s heart as he refuses to believe the horrific newspaper article that Stamp Paid knows to be true.

Analyzing Syntax Within Beloved

Jonell Logan is an independent curator, arts advocate, and founder of 300 Arts Project, LLC. 300 Arts is an arts management and consulting company that helps museums, colleges, and collectors expand and document their exhibitions, scholarship, and collections. Their mission is to support increased arts engagement, education, and appreciation through the presentation and investigation of contemporary art. To that end, Ms. Logan served as the adviser and catalog essayist for the Columbia Museum of Art's 2016 exhibition, <a href="http://www.300artsproject.co/projects-and-available-exhibitions.html" target="_blank">REMIX: Themes and Variations in African-American Art</a>. Recent exhibitions have included shows at Carrack Modern in Durham, and an upcoming exhibition at <a href="http://www.lightfactory.org/" target="_blank">The Light Factory in Charlotte</a>, North Carolina.

Dr. Elizabeth West, Professor of English at Georgia State University, is the Executive Director of SAMLA and the Director of Academics for the Center for the Study of Africa and Its Diaspora, also located at Georgia State.
Elizabeth J. West received her Ph.D. in English with a certificate in Women’s Studies from Emory University. Her teaching and scholarship focuses on spirituality and gender in early African American and Women's Literature, and African Diasporic Literatures of the Atlantic World. She co-edits the Roman & Littlefield book series, Black Diasporic Worlds: Origins and Evolutions from New World Slaving. She is the author of African Spirituality in Black Women’s Fiction: (Lexington Books 2011), coeditor of Literary Expressions of African Spirituality (Lexington Books 2013). Her works can be found in critical anthologies and in journals such as MELUS, Amerikastudien, CLAJ, PALARA, JCCH, Womanist, Black Magnolias, and South Central Review. Her 2012 article, “From David Walker to President Obama: Tropes of the Founding Fathers in African American Discourses of Democracy, or the Legacy of Ishmael” was recognized among “Featured Articles” in American Studies Journals: A Directory of Worldwide Resources.
She was among scholars interviewed and consulted in the production of Georgia Public Broadcasting’s award winning documentary on the 75th anniversary of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. She is Treasurer of the College Language Association, Executive Director of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and serves on the Advisory Board of The Obama Institute for Transnational Studies.

Toni Morrison's 'Beloved': People, Places, and Themes

Carolyn Denard received her BA in English from Jackson State University, her MAT in English from Indiana University, and her PhD in American Studies from Emory University, where she focused on twentieth century American literature and cultural history and where she completed a doctoral dissertation on Toni Morrison. She has received post-doctoral research fellowships from the American Association of University Women, the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, and the Women’s Studies Program at Emory University.
As founder of the Toni Morrison Society, Dr. Denard extended the invitation and led the efforts to establish the Society as an official author society of the American Literature Association in May 1993. Since the Society’s founding, she has served as the Society’s first president and as the Society’s Board Chair, a position she has held since 1996.
Her scholarly research focuses on African American myths, ethics, and cultural tropes in Toni Morrison's fiction. A leading authority on Morrison, she has contributed to critical anthologies and essay collections on Morrison's work, and she is editor of What Moves at the Margin: Selected Non- Fiction by Toni Morrison (University Press of Mississippi 2008) and Toni Morrison: Conversations, a collection of interviews (University Press of Mississippi 2008). She is currently completing a book- length manuscript entitled Tar Women and Magical Men: Myth and Heroism in Toni Morrison’s Fiction.

"Beloved in Translation" consists of readings of the book in Hindi, Korean, Lingala, and Spanish by UNG faculty, staff, and students. The readings illustrate the international impact of the novel which was translated into more than 30 languages. Readings were contributed by Rana Gautam (Hindi), Jin Im (Korean), Guyline Malala (Lingala), and Veronica Gomez-Gomez (Spanish).

Beloved in Translation

In this poster, the presenter identifies a moment in Toni Morrison’s Beloved--a theme, a character, an event, etc.--that resonates with a 21st-century context. The student’s poster is designed to include an overview of key passages from the novel, an overview of the current event in a 21st-century context, a Works Cited section, and suggestions for further reading.
