Modern Language Day 2021

My idea connects to the Spanish culture because the artist I chose to model my art after is famous in Spain and other Hispanic countries for his art and art style. (Artist: Fernando Botero)

Fernando Botero was a Spanish artist that created paintings with objects in them that were not to scale. Often times things were blown out of proportion in the paintings or even misshapen. I intend on creating mine on Botero-Like creation.

San Miguel de Allende

For my craft, I made earrings in the shape of the Huichol Flower using beads. The Huichol people are indigenous people of Mexico that live in central northwest states of Navarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. I spent 2 hours making each earring. I spent roughly 50 dollars on all of the materials to make the earrings.

On this piece, I spent three weeks doing around ten portraits, with each being different sizes. Each reflect personal interest, along with references to paintings by Diego Velazquez.The concept of this art was derived from a song by the Beatles- one of my favorite bands- titled ‘Lovely Rita’. This made for a play on words, as the main subject of the art was Enfanta Margarita, of Velazquez’s ’Las Meninas’. The primary tool I used was a wooden palette and acrylics.

For my craft I decided to make Seed Bead Bracelets. I'm not a very crafty person nor am I any good at crafting but these bracelets only took me about ten minutes to make. To make these I used seed beads and string called wildfire.

This project was completed over a cumulative three days of painting, completed on canvas. Acrylics were used, and elements of the painting derived lots of inspiration from Salvador Dali’s work. Concepts and setting were taken largely from many of Dal’s art, including butterflies, a windmill, a forties car, and desert setting.

This painting was created over the course of a week, and took several hours to complete (approximate ten). The primary inspiration behind this piece was Salvador Dali’s work, and I attempted to use aspects of his painting to create a surrealist piece. In the piece, an easel is visible, holding a head with blank eyes and a birdcage for a head. A snail and gulls are present, along with an octopus slightly obscured in the corner. There is a beach, and a key in the ocean behind it. This key symbolizes imagination, which can unlock endless possibilities through the mind. Acrylics and canvas were used to construct this piece.

“La llave de la mente” (“The Key to the Mind”)

It is a paper mache mask, made out of newspaper, cornstarch, and paint. I spent 5 hours working on it over quarantine and learned about it through my Spanish teacher.

These are paper quilled earrings, quilling is the art of rolling and glueing strips of paper into different shapes. These two pieces: a hair clip and pair of earrings took about 1 to 2 hours a piece.

I spent 1 month on my project and I based the dresses off of four of Frida Kahlo's paintings. The dresses are, respectively, inspired from My Dress Hangs There; Memory, the Heart; Self-Portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky; and Marxism Will Give Health to the Sick.

To sculpt and paint the alebrije, it took roughly 9 hours to complete.

The Five Most Populous Countries that use Spanish as the Official Language

This took 2 days to complete. Painted with watercolor, this painting is a view of La Sagrada Familia in Spain. I chose to do this because I enjoy painting architecture and landscapes.

This took two weeks to complete. It was created with colored pencils, and was inspired by Francisco de Goya and Día de los Muertos. It includes things commonly found during Day of the Dead celebrations, like flowers, butterflies, and decorated skulls.

This artwork took one month to complete. Painted with watercolor, this art exhibits the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, located in Spain. I chose to do this building because of its interesting and intricate architecture and design. I also created a sky with colors that help give contrast to the uniformed color of the building and make it stand out more.

This quilling of Las Meninas puts the elusive and mysterious painting into yet another art form. The project took about 16 hours to create, including cutting the paper and holding the shapes in place while they dried. La Infanta Margarita has a 3D skirt, further emphasizing her importance in this work of art.

This quilling was an endeavor sparked by quarantine and a love for brilliant artists. Each slip of paper involved was hand-cut and shaped, requiring around six hours of work each day for an entire week. This work of art depicts Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait as a Tehuana, one of her most elegant and sophisticated masterpieces.

Yamilet is Mexican American and Samiha is from Bangladesh, and Ymailet introduces Samiha to various parts of her culture. From things she celebrated to music she listens to this is a scrapbook showing our journey. This project took about 7 hours to put together excluding the time spent learning about the culture.

I spent about 30 minutes researching different styles of Hispanic clay pottery. I spent about 45 minutes spinning my piece of clay. Then it had to burn in the kiln for a couple of days. After that, I took a variety of pictures of it.

It took a total of 37 hours and 43 minutes. I have 5 blocks of 10 rows of double crochets.
I crocheted a 24.5in ,from droop to tip, and 17.8in, top to sides poncho. The colors are red,navy blue, forest green, orange, white, and black. These were the common colors for other ponchos. I have a pattern of 5 blocks with 10 rows of double crochet. This project is inspired from the Spanish speaking countries because one clothing piece they had in common was a poncho.

It took me about a week and two days to full complete the artwork. It may not be good, but the woman in color represents the future of Spanish culture, and she is taking a passage through time to remember people who had great influence in art, music, and sports.

'A Burst of France' is a colorful mixed media piece showcasing the culture of France, both modern and traditional such as food, music, art, and fashion. It took four days in total to work on the lineart, coloring, and research. The piece includes what I learned during French class and other information I saw often online and researched.

For this project I wanted to express France differently. I chose to do something within art. I could've done the Eiffel Tower something really big in France but I thought to myself of how basic that was and that's something people use to interpret France usually. I wanted to do something more culture wise so I chose to do a carnival. This painting took me 5 hours to make.

The project I am submitting for the Modern Language Competition is a class project that highlights the storyline of Chinese New Year. On the far left of our banner represents the beginning of Chinese New Year, where it all started. The legend of the Monster Nian. Nian had sharp teeth and horns. It lived high in the darkness of the mountains but around the end of lunar year he would go onshore to hurt people and livestock. Therefore, villages in China would have to run away or hide from the Nian. Until one day they could not keep this up anymore so they found a solution. They found out that the Nian did not like the color red and loud noises. So villages started to decorate their homes and gates bright red and prepared fireworks for when the Nian came. Once the beast arrived, villages would set off the fireworks to really scared it away. This was a success for them allowing them to carry on this tradition to present day. Now people that celebrate Chinese New Year throughout the world put up bright red couplets on their doors, watch bright and loud lion dances, hang lanterns and set off fireworks right at midnight.

Explaining the celebration of quinceanera.

La quinceanera

I created this Mexican vihuela using plywood, stain, and paint. I cut the plywood using a scroll saw and then sanded it by hand, being sure to measure the two separate pieces carefully so it would fit together the way it does. After cutting and sanding the pieces, I had to carefully glue each piece together to form the base shape of the vihuela. I also glued the neck of the vihuela to the base of the guitar. I then used a wood burner to add extra detail, as well as a drill to create the holes for the tuners. I used paint to create the calacas inside and the details on the front of the vihuela. I added a coat of clear stain to finish it all off. 
All in all, it took about 13-14 hours to create.

Papercutting: 牛郎 织女

I spent 11 hours on this. The figures are small enough to fit in the palm in your hand, hence the name Las Mini-ninias. They were inspired by Diego Valaquezes' Las Meninas, and are designed to be a colorful, 3D versions of the princess and her ladies in waiting. They are constructed from foam, colored paper, pipe cleaners, yarn and hot glue.
