The US state of Georgia includes the range of several periodical cicada broods and is the southernmost state in which Brood X periodical cicadas emerge; however, no research has focused on this brood in this state. We used reports of sightings on social media, communication with the public, and our own searches to determine the geographic range in Georgia and timing of biological events. Both adults and exuviae were identified to species to determine the species makeup at those locations. The first Brood X adult was photographed on April 26 in Lumpkin County, and Magicicada septendecim L. was the most common species. Online records and site visits led to distribution records in nine counties, including six that provided no records in the 2004 emergence. Driving surveys revealed patchy distributions of chorusing adults and species distribution modeling further predicted locations where Brood X can be found in future surveys. We observed cicada oviposition scars at two locations and found no effect of host plant on presence or density of scars. Lastly, collections of dead adults showed female remains were less common and more likely to be dismembered. Further investigations of the periodical cicadas in Georgia are recommended to better understand the phenology, evolution, and ecology of these remarkable insects.

The 2021 emergence of Brood X periodical cicadas <i>Magicicada</i> spp. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in Georgia, United States of America

In the United States, sing-along radio programmes became common in the 1930s. These programmes aired locally, regionally, and nationally, and they took various approaches to audience participation. Although categorized as radio participation shows, sing-along programmes were unique in that they prompted scripted musical participation by home listeners during the course of the broadcast. This article examines the most successful sing-along programme, Gillette Original Community Sing, which broadcast on the CBS network in 1936 and 1937. Participants were encouraged to imagine themselves as part of a numberless mediated community that included both audible singers in the studio audience and unheard singers spread across the continent. This community, however, was clearly bounded in terms of race. A detailed analysis of the Community Sing repertory reveals that the African American experience—as imagined primarily by white songwriters and often using blackface dialect—was the third most common song topic. By singing these songs, especially in the proximity of minstrel sketches, home listeners participated in mediated blackface performances that addressed racial anxieties and constructed white identity.

The effects of schema-based instruction on word problems in a third-grade mathematics classroom.

This chapter examines the history of peace in Europe beginning with an early sixteenth-century call to religious freedom that culminated in the late nineteenth century with widespread peace movements. It investigates how traditional nation-state methods to resolve war through treaty and diplomacy conflicted with popular notions of peace, leading to protests of the marginalized in their efforts to transcend negative peace and counter militarism. Within each era, traditional centers of authority were challenged by historically ignored voices in social movements protesting for a new relationship within societal and political constituencies. This contribution highlights how peace worked at the intersections and fissures during the great upheavals of the Reformations, Age of Enlightenment, and the Age of Imperialism.

Librarianship has been conceptualized as a vocation or calling—rather than a profession—since the 1800s. Within this historical context, librarians are encouraged to think of ourselves as possessing a natural disposition to showing perpetual engagement, enthusiasm, and self-regulation in pursuit of our shared vocation. These assumptions about the profession can sometimes shield us from introspective criticism, but they can also prevent us from recognizing and managing the systemic occupational issues that afflict us.
 
Academic Librarian Burnout can help librarians develop the agency to challenge the assumptions and practices that have led to so much professional burnout. Academic Librarian Burnout addresses unsustainable work environments and preserves and celebrates the unique contributions of librarians.
