Unresolved issues from the Second World War still lurk beneath the surface of East Asia politics. On April 21, 2021, a South Korean Seoul Central District Court dismissed a civil suit filed by 20 comfort women survivors and their families, citing a potential diplomatic clash if he did otherwise. The legacy of WWII continues to evoke deep feelings and hostility even though the war ended over seven decades ago. This article will argue that the historiography of the Tokyo Trial and subsequent narratives are more complex and require deeper analysis to resolve the contemporary geopolitical climate in East Asia. The issue of comfort women depicts the complexity and nuances of the history problem by highlighting America’s role in the infelicitous issue that began with the Tokyo Trial and continued through the 1965 Normalization Treaty. Systemic sexism also played a significant role, and ignored the role of women during the conflict. The historiography underscores the complexity of the historical narrative that selectively includes or excludes vital events while glossing over contemporary historical disputes. This analysis provides insights into future policy formulation and America’s role in the region. The paper is divided into three sections. The first offers historical context, followed by an overview of the issues overlooked or avoided during the Tokyo Trials. The last section highlights past reparations payments while also exploring American policy implications.

Korean Comfort Women: The Keystone of East Asia's Unresolved History Problem

This study uses multiple regressions and moderation analysis to examine the relationship between disaster and crime in the 10 largest cities in Texas. The regressions revealed that yearly days with disaster significantly predicted Robbery, Murder, Rape, Burglary, and Auto Theft. Additionally, social disorganization and population density were often found to predict crime. Moderation analysis revealed that social disorganization increases the effect of yearly days with disaster on Burglary rates, which serve as a proxy for looting. These findings indicate that, on average, disaster responders, public safety, and security personnel in large cities can expect increases to crime as days with major weather events and disasters increase, particularly when those increases are paired with high levels of social disorganization in a city. Future security and disaster research should incorporate disaster phase timing, as well as compliance with disaster warnings to better understand the relationship between disaster, crime, and security.

Modern warfare success depends in large part on dominating enemy air space. Air superiority is needed for mobilizing troops, maintaining logistics supply chains, and neutralizing the enemy’s movement. After the invention of radar by the British in the 1930s, bomber and fighter aircraft became increasingly vulnerable to enemy air defense. To overcome this, the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the United States Air Force developed low radar signature stealth aircraft with the capability to enter the enemy’s airspace. Since then, several countries claim that they have anti-stealth technologies to counter and detect stealth aircraft. Some analysts argue against stealth aircraft based on cost effect-benefit analyses in comparison with electronic attack aircraft, drones, and hypersonic missiles. Until anti-stealth technology proves its supremacy over either manned or unmanned stealth aircraft, stealth technology is going to persist. Using stealth aircraft against small nation-states or non-state actors may be costly, but to maintain a country’s edge over military peer-competitors it is unquestionably needed.
