The emergence of social media as a platform for sharing information and affirming social identities has transformed the way people interact, disseminate information and identify with others. The following examines how Arab tribes in Iraq and Saudi Arabia are utilizing social media to reaffirm their tribal identities, with a focus on the Shammar tribal confederation. In particular, it argues that despite the fact that modernizing impulses have threatened traditional lifestyles of Arab tribal communities and undercut allegiances to tribal affiliations, many tribal members have enthusiastically embraced social media as an effective tool to revitalize tribal identities in the internet age. 
This article will evaluate three elements of tribal presence on the internet and social media within the overarching context of relocating tribal practices from a physical space to a virtual space. First, it will examine the iconography of Iraqi tribal websites to discern how tribes present images to represent tribal ideals. Second, it will investigate how tribes use social media as a platform to reenact communal tribal practices of sharing of information and enhancing a sense of solidarity among tribal members. Finally, this paper will compare how tribal affiliates in Iraq and Saudi Arabia use cyberspace to contest and negotiate authority vis vis the state. 
This study seeks to contribute to discussions on continuities and innovations among marginalized communities during the integrative processes of modernity, and broaden our perspectives of how tribal communities are adapting to an increasingly computer literate and globalized world to speak for themselves in a direct manner previously unavailable.

Many studies find that traditional option pricing models fail to work in practice. The implied volatility smile is one example. In this study, we examine deviations of spot prices from prices implied by put-call parity for Korean KOSPI 200 index options, one of the most actively traded derivative products in the world. Deviations are significant and economically meaningful across different moneyness categories spanning deep-in-the-money to deep-out-of-the-money options. Determinants of put-call disparities for the KOSPI 200 index options include past spot return moments, cognitive biases, and prior option trading volume relative to spot trading volume. We show mispricing is more likely to occur after periods of extreme downturns in the stock market, implying demand for put options increases relative to call options when investors become more likely to insure against extreme loss. We also show that put-call disparity rates have predictive power for future spot returns due to overreaction of KOSPI 200 index option traders, rather than to information contained in option prices.

<h3>Purpose</h3>
This paper aims to study how firms’ longitudinal and dynamic growth will be affected by their bribing decisions to address the controversies existing in the extant literature on the impacts of briberies.
<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>
The authors acquired information from Enterprise Survey by the World Bank and compiled a unique panel data set including firms from five South American countries between 2006 and 2017. The authors used multiple methods to estimate firms’ productivity. A comprehensive inspection of firms’ longitudinal development using a two-step estimation method that addressed the endogeneity issue was then conducted.
<h3>Findings</h3>
Bribery could significantly shorten the waiting time for resources to become available. However, bribery also substantially and robustly slows down firms’ productivity growth over time. Meanwhile, a bribing firm is very likely to bribe again in the future.
<h3>Originality/value</h3>
This paper contributes to the extant literature by pioneering the empirical study of firms’ bribing decisions and their longitudinal growth. First, the authors constructed unique panel data and established a longitudinal investigation upon firms’ dynamic growth after bribing, filling the literature gap by studying the time-lagging effect of bribery on firms’ growth. Second, the authors performed a comprehensive overview of South American firms’ growth by looking into the dynamics of their production, employment, resource delay and productivity across years. Third, the authors found that bribing exerted contingent impacts upon firms’ growth, reconciling the mixed evidence in the literature.

Does Bribing Lead to Extra Convenience or is it a Barrier to Longitudinal Growth? Empirical Evidence from South American Firms

Is queer social science possible? Early queer theorists disparaged empiricism as a normalizing, modernist discourse. Nonetheless, LGBTQI+ social scientists have applied queer concepts in empirical projects. Rather than seek a queer method, we ask, Is there an empirical perspective that (ontologically) envisions social relations more queerly—attending to discursive and materialist productions of reality? Dorothy Smith’s work foregrounds people’s activities of engaging texts and satisfies Black queer studies’ and new materialisms’ critiques of early queer theory. Underutilized and often misread, especially its ethnomethodological sensibilities and its vision of actors as relational, practical actors, her work shows how my race is not mine, it is ours; your sexual orientation is not yours, it is ours; their gender is not theirs, it is ours. Smith offers an ontology without essence, grand theory, or normativity, facilitating a range of queer, interpretive projects—from the intersectional to the transnational to the embodied.

Smithing Queer Empiricism: Engaging Ethnomethodology for a Queer Social Science

This study investigated the effects of instructional and administrative text messages on student academic achievement and sense of learning. Ninety-eight Food, Nutrition, and Wellness students in grades 9th through 12th were involved in this study. In this quasi-experimental study, there was an experimental group and a comparison group. Students in the experimental group received instructional and administrative text messages three times a week for a total of nine weeks. A one-way ANCOVA and independent samples t-test were used for data analyses. The study found a statistically significant difference in academic achievement and sense of learning with students in the experimental group scoring higher as compared to students in the control group. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference with females in the treatment group scoring higher than males in the treatment group.

Purpose
This paper proposes the use of a gauge function as a measure of technical efficiency. The measure of technical inefficiency from a gauge function is desirable as the estimation of a gauge function is not subject to the endogeneity problem under the behavioral assumption of profit maximization in the competitive market.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors address three important properties of a gauge function, i.e. linear homogeneity, monotonicity and convexity in inputs and outputs, and show how such properties are utilized in its estimation. Then, the authors apply the estimation of a gauge function to US Blacksmiths in 1850 and 1880 to show that a failure to satisfy such properties may lead to an incorrect inference on the technical efficiency.
Findings
The authors find that the Blacksmiths in the 1850s were technically more efficient than the ones in the 1880s, indicating technical regress in Blacksmithing when the properties are satisfied.
Originality/value
This paper introduces a measure of technical inefficiency from a gauge function and shows how to estimate the gauge function parametrically for the measure. The authors show McFadden's gauge function and its properties, which differ from the properties of other distance functions. The authors emphasize linear homogeneity as well as monotonicity and convexity in inputs and outputs, which must be satisfied in the estimation of a gauge function.

This book argues that embryology and the reproductive sciences played a key role in the rise of the Gothic novel in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Diana Pérez Edelman dissects Horace Walpole’s use of embryological concepts in the development of his Gothic imagination and provides an overview of the conflict between preformation and epigenesis in the scientific community. The book then explores the ways in which Gothic literature can be read as epigenetic in its focus on internally sourced modes of identity, monstrosity, and endless narration. The chapters analyze Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto; Ann Radcliffe’s A Sicilian Romance, The Italian, and The Mysteries of Udolpho; Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; Charles Robert Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer; and James Hogg’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner, arguing that these touchstones of the Gothic register why the Gothic emerged at that time and why it continues today: the mysteries of reproduction remain unsolved.
