Creating a Culture of Mindful Innovation in Higher Education

<p>The main goals of this study were to determine if student growth mindset impacted achievement and motivation and to see if gender and ethnicity made a difference in the type of mindset a student possesses. The study was conducted in a suburban middle school in Georgia with a predominantly white population and aboveaverage socio-economic status. Ninety-five students from four 7th grade social studies classes took part in the eight-week study. The results from the study showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between mindset gains and academic gains; however, there was a strong positive, statistically significant relationship between mindset gains and motivation gains. These results indicated that motivation could be the linking factor between mindset and higher academic achievement.</p>

Teacher impact on student growth mindset.

<h3>Purpose</h3>
<p>This paper aims to examine how the “wage premium,” the percentage by which wages earned by skilled workers exceed those of unskilled workers, varies across industries characterized by different levels of competitiveness.</p>
<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>
<p>A theoretical model employing constant elasticity of substitution (CES) utility function and constant returns to scale production function is developed and analyzed to derive the effects of industry competitiveness on the wage premium. Econometric methods are applied to Chilean manufacturing data to test implications of theoretical model.</p>
<h3>Findings</h3>
<p>Once the relative factor endowment is being controlled, market competition significantly reduces the wage premium. More specifically, given with the same relative factor endowment, the wage premium is significantly higher under oligopolistic competition than under monopolistic competition. Empirical evidence from Chilean manufacturers supports our theoretical conclusions.</p>
<h3>Practical implications</h3>
<p>During economic development, the reallocation of production factors from unskilled labor-intensive to skilled labor-intensive industries raises the wage premiums received by skilled workers. Besides, skilled workers will earn higher wages by working in more highly concentrated industries instead of more competitive industries. This needs to be considered by government policymakers who must balance promotion of technical change with prevention of extreme the income inequality.</p>
<h3>Originality/value</h3>
<p>This paper examines how market structure affects wage premiums, providing new insights into a well-established literature that largely maintains that wage premiums are primarily a function of relative factor endowments or international trade.</p>

The Wage Premium and Market Structure: Theory and Empirical Evidence from Chilean Manufacturers

<p>Prior research indicates a significant relation between life events and the demand for life insurance. This paper is the first study to relate the demand for life insurance to household portfolio holdings in a dynamic framework. The study examines changes in life insurance demand as a function of changes in household portfolio holdings and life events using panel data during the recent financial crisis. The results indicate that household portfolio holdings are more significant than life events in explaining life insurance ownership decisions, and suggest a complementary rather than a substitution relationship between the ownership of life insurance and the holdings of equity and bonds during recessions. The results also indicate that households with more financial assets allocated to bonds drop significantly more term life insurance coverage. Further implications for practitioners are discussed.</p>

A Dynamic Analysis of the Demand for Life Insurance during the 2008 Financial Crisis: Evidence from the Panel Survey of Consumer Finances

Rountree contextualizes the fire within the scope of the twentieth century gay liberation movement and explores how the play's various production sites both embody and transcend the time and place of the tragedy.</p>

"Beer, Prayer and Nellydrama": (Im)Possibilities in Max Vernon's The View UpStairs

<p>This study investigated the connections between religious ideology, authoritarianism, intergroup relations, and political orientation. Building from the psychological literature on religious belief, the current study sought to explore the extent of these relationships using a university sample from the American South. The Diverse Learning Environments survey was administered to undergraduate students, with 2,582 responding. Variables of interest were religious belief, authoritarianism, intergroup relation views, diversity-related actions, and political views. Results suggest that while general religious orientation did not correlate positively with authoritarianism, Christians, specifically those associated with Evangelical groups, displayed greater authoritarianism than non-believers and reported fewer diversity-related interactions. While results indicated that more salient religious identity was associated with right-leaning political beliefs, an unexpected finding was that non-belief was associated with greater political involvement. These results suggest patterns of ingroup favoritism among conservative Christians which may lead to outgroup derogation and influence voting patterns. </p>

An analysis of the relationships between religious orientation, authoritarianism, cross cultural interactions, and political views.

<p>Researchers have struggled to find rational risk factors that explain momentum profits derived from buying recent winners and shorting recent losers. Behavioral explanations have been offered that focus on the tendencies of investors to underreact to news and recommendations. Our study provides an alternative explanation centered on the behavior of sell-side analysts. We find a change in consensus recommendation from a hold to a buy is accompanied by an increase in momentum profits of 3.40% annually. Momentum profits fall, yet remain material, after the passage of Reg FD and the enactment of the Global Analyst Research Settlement. Our results support a behavioral explanation of investor cognitive biases fueled by analyst regency and optimism biases.</p>

Does Analyst Optimism Fuel Stock Price Momentum?

<h3>Purpose</h3>
<p>The purpose of this paper is to determine if the failure of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to persecute Madoff is, in fact, an ethical failure. The authors turn to the extension of Aristotelian theory of moral values, virtue epistemology, to identify specific failures. The authors generalize this study’s conclusions to an overall responsibility of regulatory agencies to exercise epistemic virtues in their decision-making process. The authors explore how behavioral biases confound the execution of epistemic duty, and how awareness of behavioral biases can alleviate epistemic failures. The authors conclude this study with recommendations to prevent future frauds of Madoff proportions.</p>
<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>
<p>The authors rely on recent advances in virtue epistemology and behavioral finance. The authors combine these two theoretical approaches to better understand the duty of competence inherent in being a finance professional, and even more so in being a regulator entrusted with overseeing financial industry, and psychological biases that may prevent finance professionals and regulators from performing this duty.</p>
<h3>Findings</h3>
<p>The paper concludes that the SEC employees failed to exercise epistemic virtues in their handling of the complaints implicating Madoff’s firm of fraud. This failure reveals a consistent pattern of behavioral biases in decision-making. The authors posit that knowledge of ethical theory, specifically virtue epistemology, as well as awareness of behavioral biases, which inhibit epistemically virtuous cognitive process, can improve the functioning of both finance industry and its overseers. The authors suggest that future finance professionals and regulators need to acquire this knowledge while pursuing their undergraduate education: it is the duty of business schools to facilitate this progress.</p>
<h3>Originality/value</h3>
<p>This paper combines the theory of virtue epistemology with the current knowledge of behavioral biases, which distort rational decision-making, to explain the failures of regulators to analyze fraud reports. The authors extend this finding to recommend the inclusion of the theory of virtue epistemology in business schools’ ethics curriculum.</p>
