Modern Language Day 2022

You're probably wondering, What is so special about a sombrero? What makes it stand out? Why does it represent Spanish culture? The sombrero is a symbol of Mexican culture to be specific. It's an important part of the hat dance. Most people don't know this but the sombrero tells a story about a young man who gives up his most valuable possessions (his sombrero) to win the affectionate of a woman he loves If you know anything about the spanish culture you know that sombreros are a very big part of the music industry. Most banda or male singers wear it.

Mi Sombrero

My painting is of a Latina woman who is wearing authentic clothing. She is walking in a field of flowers and the red flowers climb up her dress as she walks with a sunset behind her. I used watercolor for the flowers, dress, hair, and skin because I could make it look realistic, especially the skin because I wanted it to look like she had dimension. This painting represents how beautiful the culture, clothing, and people are. She shows elegancy in her identity which represents where she comes from.

My painting is of the Virgin Mary, she is surrounded in three different rose colors. The rows are (from left to right) green, white, and red. They are separated in columns to represent the colors of the Mexican flag. It was done with these colors because in the majority Mexicans are Catholic, the religion has a feast day for her that at the church a picture piece where she is surrounded by many flowers but especially roses. I spent about 6 hrs on this project.

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe

For my Modern Language Day project, I created a scrapbook meant to capture some of the many amazing traditions of the Hispanic culture. The book explains ten traditions of various different Hispanic regions (with two pages for each) by listing some of which who celebrate, facts, and the meaning/origin of each one. While I could by no means cover all of the fascinating celebrated events in the short eight hours that I spent making it, my aim was to cover some of those most prevalent of today to educate others who may not have had prior knowledge of such major parts of the lives of those around them.

What It Is What It Represents:
 
This is a piñata which is sometimes used in Mexican parties and celebrations. It is hit with a stick until it breaks, where goodies inside spill out. This piñata has dia de los muertos which is a celebration of life and death.

I chose to draw Juan Ponce de Leon because he explored and settled Puerto Rico, founding the colony's oldest settlement, Caparra, near what is now San Juan. He was also the first European to reach Florida. He was considered a hero, he treated everyone like his own family, he gave gold to the poor to help them out. This is why I chose Juan.

Frida Kahlo captured the beauty of indigenous Mexican culture through the use of vivid colors, Mexican mythology allusions, and aspects of religion. In addition, her work subjects her personal tragedies and realities. She also used her platform to support her political beliefs as well as to be a focal point for gender equality. She was openly a feminist and empowered Mexican womanhood. Her work and legacy are about hope, feminine power, and cultural empowerment.

We chose the Temple of Debod because it is a symbol of Spain’s influence and sign of honor to the rest of the world. The Temple of Debod is an Egyptian temple that was reconstructed in Madrid, Spain. It was originally built in Aswan, Egypt to worship the god Amun. However, when the Aswan Dam was going to be constructed, the Temple of Debod as well as others were in danger of being destroyed. So instead of destroying it, Egypt decided to dismantle it and send it to Spain as a thanks for helping construct the dam. It was reassembled in Madrid just outside the Parque de Oeste. Carlos Arias Navarro inaugurated it in July 1972 and made it open to the public for all of the Spanish citizens and tourists to see the ancient temple and walk on the outside area of the temple which is also perfect for watching the sunset.

Through this piece I hoped to represent how the hispanic culture of the past holds and feeds the Hispanic culture of the present and future. To begin, the vase depicted is a recreation of a Socorro style vase. Which was an artistic style of ceramic creation in South America circa 900 A.D. - 1350 A.D. Next, to represent current and future Hispanic culture I chose to paint the national flowers of each Hispanic country. By doing all this, I hoped to create a symbol that represents how the creations of the past as well as the culture they represent help feed modern day Hispanic culture, so that it can thrive and evolve into its most beautiful form of pure human expression.

I chose the Mighty Galleon, as I think it represents a time when on the sea the mighty powers of the time clashed, and I think of the Spanish empire of that time. And how much they funded different adventures, plundered relics, and such. That is why I chose the Mighty Galleon for my work. This took me A fair few hours of modeling, printing, and painting the different aspects of the boat, which came out well.
